Product Review – iJoomla News Portal ExtensionI had been tearing out my hair for 2 weeks or more trying to think of some way to make our site's homepage look exactly how I wanted, and at the same time trying to make the ongoing management of the site easier. I also needed to get these issues sorted out quickly and before we began marketing the site, too.

Of particular concern to me was our front page, as that's one of, if not the most crucial element in a websites success (because if people don't like the look of the landing page, which is usually the site's homepage, they will often just leave). Quality content is of course the most critical element overall ,but you also need to make the site visually appealing so that people will want to stick around long enough to read your great articles.....

What I was looking for was something that:

  • Could manage my front-page articles automatically, & that also displayed them better (tighter, neater, more artistic/exciting etc)
  • With an automatic thumbnail function (and with thumbnail function actually working/displaying too - you'd think this would always be the case, but...... ).
  • Ensures thumbnails are displaying all one size in each designated area or section, with the sizes chosen by me (and the size actually being adhered to -  see above complaint......)
  • That didn't require me having to go to the module or plugin manager within Joomla and then digging around in the list / multiple pages of extensions to find a particular extension every time that  I added or updated an article, category, etc. (.....plus then usually an additional half an hour trying to remember just how to configure the often complex settings of some such modules / plug-ins.........)
  • Something that was INDEPENDENT OF ANY TEMPLATE, so that if / when I changed templates in the future I could do it & be up & running again immediately after the template change.........
  • Something that once set up was EASY TO USE and could easily be managed by someone less technical than me if required (ie: if I went on holiday or got sick etc)
  • That wasn't too expensive, or didn't involve paying some new start-up a ridiculous fee every month for some service or script to achieve what I need..

After wasting time and money on some things which have failed to deliver (or were just too darn time-consuming to manage.....), I've finally found something I think will be the answer to my prayers (and probably yours, too) - iJoomla News Portal.

I'm still learning all of it's features and possibilities, and it probably took about 2 or 3 days to get my homepage how I wanted (I am probably a bit fussier than most... and it's still not 100% perfect.... but someone with even modest CSS skills should be able to do even better than me, and much faster) but this is one terrific extension, is very easy to use once you start playing with it, and my only regret so far is that I didn't get it sooner.

Our homepage looks so much better now that I hate even looking at how it used to look!, and I also don't even have to worry about rotating or managing my front-page articles anymore, that's all done automatically for me. It also can do the same for my Sections & Categories pages throughout the site too (once I get around to doing them.....). I really like this product a lot and cannot imagine now going back to the old front page style, and I think if you try it you will like it too.

Here's just a few of the main features:

Product Review – iJoomla News Portal Extension

iJoomla News Portal - Feature Highlights:

  • Create a "Hands-Free" news portal
  • All new items added automatically....
  • New sections/categories added automatically....
  • Choose which articles to add from certain sections or categories...
  • Article images are added automatically...
  • Thumbnail generated automatically for the first image of each article.
  • You can also insert 3rd party modules, such as video or tabbed modules, into a NewsPortal page (such as we have on our homepage...)

With the iJoomla News Portal, you don't need to (manually) add articles to your news portal -  every article added to your Joomla site will (also) show at the top of your news portal home page as well as the section or category home pages (if you want it to - you can block any articles, categories or sections you don't want processed)..

You can choose which sections, categories and articles to use in the news portal, giving you maximum control over the articles you display.

Images are also added automatically as long as you place them in your article using the mosimage tag (translation for newbies: Images can be inserted normally, using the image insertion within the joomla text editor..... ). On the home page, users will see a thumbnail of the first image of the article, in a size you specify for each zone.

iJoomla News Portal component is also  "hands free". As you add new items, older articles flow from one zone to the next automatically: Top Stories -- Leading Stories -- More News etc.
